TeXTILE NEWS: LANGEWEILE. BOREDOM. ENNUI. 5TH INTERNATIONAL SMALL FORMAT CHALLENGE
ORGANISED BY Gudrun Heinz
Boredom? A certain touch? Only at first sight. About 150 participants coming from 14 different European countries have paid attention to this basic state of human life and found that boredom very often leads to a real source of creativity and inspiration.
The challenge proved to be anything but boring! About 250 entries that have been submitted reflect a wide variety of surprising interpretations. The jury had also controversial discussions when making the first selection.
It was one of my personal challenges to design 15 arrangements based on this selection in order to find an appealing arrangement of the whole exhibition as well as to emphasise every single of the 150 works as well.
What about black coloured carrier fabrics this time? The members of the jury had to deal with this point during their second meeting as well ... and the decision was: Yes, let's take black!
Please take a look at the slide show below. The black background provided by the panels is gorgeous, isn't it? These are photographs of the gallery at The Festival of Quilts in Birmingham (UK).
The exhibition is designed to be touring and will be shown at various venues both in Germany and abroad. All the hosts are looking forward to numerous visitors. So please attend the show somewhere on its way through Europe.
By the way: One of the pieces will be an award-winning one in the end. Visitors will vote for their favourite pieces.
There is a CD-ROM featuring all the art works on display available. On the CD-ROM you will find photographs of each piece as well as some interesting comments stated by the artists (available in English, in German, in French or in Russian). The price of each CD-ROM is 12,- EUR plus shipping and handling: 2,50 EUR within Germany (not insured) or 4,50 EUR within Europe (not insured). If interested, send an e-mail to info[at]quiltsundmehr.de, please.

The 5th edition of the International Quilt Festival Riga was organised by the Latvian Guild and took place as part of the Riga City Festivity programme. This time the visitors had the opportunity to see and evaluate seven diverse exhibitions and one of them was Textile News: Langeweile. Boredom. Ennui. More than 2000 visitors attended the Festival and were delighted.
There was a mini quilt competition for Latvian schoolchildren “Where the Sun Plays” that was organised by the Latvian Guild in different age groups. This year a very special prize was sponsored by BERNINA International – the sewing machine “Bernette” which went to the winner in the age group from 7-13 years. Loreta Nesko (12 years old) was awarded for her quilt shown above.
